A bizarre and comfortable victory for Westbury as their goals came from three penalties and a wonder strike which saw DJ Wheeler complete a hattrick.
Visiting keeper Matt Tilley kept the score down with a number of good saves.
The first two penalties came following blatant handballs from Shaun Sheppard headers in the opening 15 minutes of the game; both spot kicks were scored in identical fashion by Wheeler and Devizes’ Robbie Mitchell was sent off for the 2nd handball which saved Shaun Sheppard’s header from going in!
At times it seemed too easy for United as they passed the ball around confidently without adding to their score, although Tilley did well to deny Wheeler, Nathan Hallett-Young and Mark Young while Shaun Sheppard found the side-netting with a volley. In a rare attack Devizes managed to break forward with Adam Collington saving Ben List’s 20 yarder.
Town’s Dan Lardner pulled a goal back straight after half time with a low curling free kick which seemed to spark the hosts back into life; just a minute later Wheeler unleashed the wonder strike from long range to complete his hattrick when nothing seemed on with him surrounded by defenders!
Matt Minnis had a chance to get Devizes back into the game but he shot straight at Collington before the final penalty came for a push by Tilley on 56; he had saved Craig Sheppard’s attempt then took exception to Wheeler’s stretch to reach the ball! This time Shaun Sheppard planted it into the corner of the goal to complete the scoring.
It took Tilley’s efforts to keep the score at 4-1 with him doing well to make saves from Hallett-Young and Young. The final chance of the game came for Minnis who forced Collington into a fine save.
