WESTBURY resident Ethel Wright celebrated her 100th birthday on 22nd June at Greengates Care Home, Westbury.
Ethel Sylvia Hinkley was the youngest of 7 children, born near Bromley in Kent on 22nd June 1914.
After leaving school she went into service as a lady’s maid in London, where she acquired a lifelong skill for needlework.
The coming of World War II sent her off to Birmingham to work in a munitions factory, where she met her husband Leslie Wright, an RAF Spitfire pilot. They married in Kent on 22nd September 1943.
Ethel and Les settled in Middlesbrough where they had two children, before moving to Leeds in 1960. Leslie died in 1994 and Ethel moved to Raleigh Court, Trowbridge, in 2005, to be near her daughter and her family. Ethel moved into Greengates Care Home only last year, at the age of 99.
She has four granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren. Family and friends travelled from many parts of the UK to be with Ethel as she celebrated her special day, including her cousin Monica who was her bridesmaid nearly 71 years ago.
