WESTBURY’S iconic white horse will soon be restored to its gleaming former self after it is washed next weekend ahead of a repaint.
Volunteers will take to the hill with pressure washers next weekend, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April, to blast off the dirt before the horse gets a new coat of white paint in the near future.
The revamp, which usually costs between £12,000 and £14,000, has not been done since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Westbury Town Council’s events organiser, Verity Bartlett, is overseeing the project.
Verity said, “The pressure washing will be the first phase of the renovation; we need to get all the grime off before we can do anything else.
“When it is clean, the joints between the concrete panels will be dug out and resealed, and the horse will then be repainted.
“I think it’s really important that we do this; the white horse is one of the most obvious features of Westbury and what the town is most famous for. People are always commenting on the horse and we see it every day, so it’ll be nice to have it back to its best.”
Volunteer climbing supervisor needed
Volunteers from Westbury Rotary Club will help carry out the work, but the council is on the lookout for someone qualified to supervise the work, with either a climbing instructor qualification or single pitch award (SPA).
