YOUNG people in Westbury helped shape their own youth services at a youth event earlier this year, when roughly a third of teenagers in the town gave feedback on what they’d like to see on offer.
Over 500 people aged 13-19 responded to Wiltshire Council’s questionnaire, and it is hoped that their some of their ideas will soon be put into practice.
Westbury area community youth officer Amy Schuring said, “A lot of young people have come back with ideas and now we’re working with the community to take these forward. We will be able to give more detail once we have plans firmed up.
“I’d also like to remind groups I can support them if they want to apply for funding if they have a great idea for an activity. I’m looking forward to extending the provision for young people in the area.”
The needs assessment, published in February this year, showed that young people in the area most wanted a youth club and trips away, which the service will now be looking into providing. Archery, skydiving, ice skating, paintballing, and bowling, were amongst other requested activities.
Wiltshire Council estimate that there are 1,705 people aged 13-19 in the Westbury area, and are pleased that so many are showing an interest in what’s available to them.
Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services said, “It’s encouraging to see so many young people have come forward from the local area with ideas and the community is now responding to help shape these activities.”
The youth service’s current priorities include development of the wider Local Youth Network; supporting and developing a team of volunteers to provide positive activities for young people, including drivers and people with specialised skills; developing a programme of activities and encouraging involvement.
