BA13 Community Area Partnership were pleased to hand over a £500 grant to the Anybody Can Cook Project.
The Area Board Poverty Summit, held at Matravers School last autumn, identified that many low income families struggled during the summer holidays to feed the whole family.
This was echoed in an article in a recent issue of the Telegraph where teachers were warning that pupils will be going hungry during their summer break.
Area Board Chair Cllr Gordon King, whose initiative created the poverty summit, congratulated the CAP for taking up the challenge. He said, “The Area Board, which I have the honour to chair, is united in its desire to fight the poverty and disadvantage wherever it occurs in the community area. This project is a fine example of that desire being put into action.”
The BA13 Partnership meeting in November 2014 heard directly from Catherine Maxwell about several cooking projects commissioned by Public Health which was adopted by the Area Board. The current project, which starts on Thursday 28th July from 10.30am-12.30pm, will run during the school holidays.
The headteacher of Westbury Infant School, Stacey Budge, has offered her school for this project and is working with the local primary school Heads to identify families who could participate in this course.
About 10 families during each session will make their meals then eat them for lunch and hopefully come away with some new low-cost recipe ideas. Catherine, along with Sarah Hopkins, will deliver this project with the Children’s Centre staff, including Ruth Brooks-Martin.
