It was with great sadness at the May meeting we learned of the sudden and unexpected death of our president Miss Margaret Sanders.
Margaret was also our sole remaining founder member. She had served on the committee as chairman and treasurer for 44 years until poor health forced her retirement 3 years ago when she was given the honorary position of President. Margaret was very pro active not only in the community but very much so within the guild. She was a huge asset to the craft group being an accomplished needlewoman. She was also an active member of both drama and walking groups and gave valuable input during her many years as Federation secretary. She will be greatly missed by us all. A short silence was observed as a mark of respect in Margarets memory.
Our new programme ensures we shall have yet another enjoyable year, with some interesting speakers booked and visits to local places. The highlight of the year will be in December when we attend the National Carol Service in Wells Cathedral. Our social clubs continue to be engrossed in their activities. The book club continues to read and discuss a book each month, the books being obtained from Westbury library. Likewise, the craft group are busy knitting “twiddle muffs” to be used by dementia sufferers. The walking group hope to put their boots on when the weather becomes a little cooler.
Our recent speakers have proved to be very informative, entertaining and educational. Firstly local author, Mrs. Linda Dowsett spoke very comprehensively and humorously about her experience as a contestant on the well known TV show- The Weakest Link. She was told what to wear, how to answer questions and how to address Ann Robinson. Linda also informed us of her various fund raising activities, having raised thousands of pounds enabling several guide dogs to be purchased.
Last month we learned how we could cure or alleviate our ills, aches and pains, allergies etc by using herbal remedies from the kitchen and garden. Lyn Blythe, a physio and trained Herbalist stated that medical herbalists give the same examination as GP’s and often work alongside the GP but prescribing plant medicines for treatment.
Nettles, comfrey, elderflower, dandelion leaves are a few of the many plants used. Lyn had also bought along a variety of plant medicines which she had previously made and described their various uses. She was thanked for a very informative talk. We look forward to a talk on Royal Wedding dresses at our June meeting.
