A Westbury resident has been issued with a £1,000 fixed penalty notice (FPN) after being caught fly-tipping garden waste on CCTV.
An investigation was launched by Wiltshire Council Environmental Enforcement officers after the incident was captured on a remote enforcement camera in the Warminster area. The footage showed the individual’s vehicle stopping briefly before driving away, leaving a large quantity of green waste behind.
When interviewed under caution, the person denied any involvement and was unable to explain how the waste had appeared immediately after their vehicle left the location. After assessing the evidence, officers proceeded to issue a £1,000 FPN – currently the maximum amount a local authority is permitted to issue for fly-tipping offences. As FPNs are not court convictions, the offender cannot be named.
Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said, “Fly-tipping is a reckless and damaging act that shows complete disregard for our environment and for those who value and respect the landscapes we are all responsible for. This case is another clear example of how our camera operations enable us to gather strong evidence and take decisive action against those who dump waste illegally.”
