Warminster-based Athenaeum Singers are preparing to take part in a major choral performance at Bath Abbey next month.
The choir will join The Malmesbury Singers and the Bath Philharmonia for a performance of Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at the Abbey on Friday 9th May at 7pm.
Leading the Athenaeum Singers will be their acclaimed Music Director and Conductor Thomas Mottershead. “This will be a very exciting opportunity for two of Wiltshire’s leading choral societies to join forces – something that rarely happens,” he said.
“We are also thrilled to be collaborating with one of the South West’s foremost professional orchestras, Bath Philharmonia, in the magnificent setting of Bath Abbey to provide a truly memorable experience for performance and audience alike.
“Thanks to the sponsorship of Anglian Home Improvements, we can perform this momentous piece at the scale it truly deserves.”
The Dream of Gerontius is widely regarded as the most profound works in the British choral canon, tracing the soul’s journey from death to divine judgement. The score has also seen a resurgence in public interest following its use as the musical backdrop to Nicholas Hytner’s 2025 file The Choral.
“We are thrilled to be bringing this to a live audience also with the support of several professional and renowned soloists,” added Thomas.
