Westbury Music and Arts Festival- The story so far…

WESTBURY Festival has started with a bang but it’s certainly not over yet with still more than 40 events coming up in the next 10 days.

The White Horse Community Choir & Friends will be performing a wide variety of songs from Disney to pop songs from the 60s, with a touch of gospel thrown in, on Saturday 30th September at the West End Baptist Church from 8pm. Money raised from the evening will be donated  to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Crosspoint.

Westbury Festival welcomes back the musical trio, Va-Riotous, who will be presenting ‘Gullible’s Travels’ to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the birth of author Jonathan Swift on Sunday 1st October at the West End Baptist Church from 3pm.

Va-Riotous offers an exciting new style of musical entertainment; a quirky, narrated story illustrated by musical pieces drawn from many different genres.

An unusual event for the festival this year but no doubt a very interesting one and not to be missed is Double Bill with the Old Bill Tuesday 3rd 7.30pm  at the Methodist Church.

The evening will begin with a short presentation by local historian Ward Jones, who has been looking into the history of the police in Westbury. After a short break you will be entertained by the Wiltshire Police Band who will be playing a varied programme of music.

Test your nerve with a spooky Ghost Walk around Westbury town centre with Michelle Slade on Wednesday 4th October at 7pm in the Market Place.

Michelle will take you on a ghostly walk and give you all the creepy details ending the walk at the horribly horrific Horse & Groom pub where you can settle your nerves with a drink or finish up the evening with a ghostly film, Blithe Spirit, in the Alley Film Club.

Money raised by this event will go to Wiltshire Children’s Breakaway charity which is a fund providing holidays for underprivileged children.

Acclaimed singer/songwriter, Louise Jordan, brings to the festival the stories of remarkable women of the First World War through song.

No Petticoats Here on Thursday 5th October at The Laverton is a collection of original songs telling the stories of real-life inspirational women from the First World War.

Based on extensive research and combining live and recorded sound, this show promises to be a theatre concert like no other; a rich visual and auditory experience that truly connects the audience with the past.

Louise says, “This one-woman performance will be very different to most concerts; it will be enhanced by technology as I play pre-recorded sound tracks to bring the words of the women and the sounds they experienced to life around the songs I have written. I will also present images of the women and I will be in costume to help the audience visualise the stories.”

No Petticoats Here is the culmination of 12 months of research that has taken Louise to the battlefields of France and Belgium including the Somme and Ypres, as well as countless museums and historic research centres.Through contact with the relatives and biographers of some of these extraordinary women, Louise has been able to add greater depth and detail to their stories bringing to life their courage and compassion.

Tickets are available from the box office 01252 745444 or by emailing info@westburyfestival.org.uk and online at www.westburyfestival.org.uk.
