LOCAL woman, Lizzie Seymour, has dressed the shop window of Davies of Westbury with poppies to raise money for The Poppy Appeal.
Lizzie Seymour, who has worked for Davies for 10 years, knitted lots of poppies to use in a window display in the Davies hardware store in Westbury. She initially started creating the knitted poppies to help out EJ Crafts with the War Memorial ‘Yarn bomb’.
Lizzie said, “I heard the war memorial was going to be decorated and I made some poppies for that, but one day I asked the shop owner Gary and his wife, if I could decorate the shop too, so that the display is both there and here, and they agreed.”
Owner of Davies hardware, Gary Davies said,”If you take some of the goods in the window, the wholesalers we deal with also provide donations to the poppy appeal so it all ties in together, so I thought ‘why not?’I’m just a bit aware of what she will want to do for the 100th year next year!”
With the hundreds of poppies made you would imagine the project to have taken a long time, but for keen knitter Lizzie it didn’t take as long as you might think.
Lizzie added, “I’m happy with the window, my hobby is knitting, so it doesn’t take me very long to make anything and i thoroughly enjoyed it. I even made some for a pre-school to put together, so they could raise some money as well.
“I even thought about making more banners to spread the display further along!”
“Some of my colleagues helped as well, so we kept it within the staff. Those who couldn’t knit, got family members to help them. People think the display is absolutely amazing and the lovely ladies at Davies were thanked by the British Legion. ”
Lizzie has also made poppy badges that she is selling in the store for a small donation to The Poppy Appeal and has so far raised almost £100.
