THE hills of Westbury came alive with runners in funky helmets and fabulous fancy dress for the second year of the Hilly Helmet Challenge.
Organised by Dilton Marsh local Robin-Mark Schols, the Hilly Helmet Challenge was inspired by his own recovery from brain surgery when he had to wear a helmet wherever he went, even when he went for a run.
The run took place at Leighton Recreation Centre on Wednesday 15th August, raising money for the charity Brain Tumour Support.
Robin said, “It was a fantastic night, even better than last year. The challenge was all about promoting the charity; this challenge is my baby, it’s very important to me. Entries and sponsorship collected should total over £2,000 for the charity.
“The winner of this year’s challenge was from Glastonbury, beating last year’s winner by 45 seconds. Paul Thorne won the prize for best helmet, with a shiny helmet in the colours of the charity logo.
“After the success of last year, we knew this event had the potential to grow,” said Robin. “We had more runners than last year, with 151 taking part. Over 30 prizes were donated for the raffle, including sports massages and running clothing, which totalled about £800 worth of prizes, and we are very grateful.
“It was a feel-good event; the Westbury running group was well represented, and we had runners from Gloucester and Yeovil.
“We have fantastic volunteers, sponsors, and marshals. Many thanks to everyone that was involved in helping out and thank you to friends and family who supported me to put the event together. A special mention to Kate Connell who raised £80 by asking for sponsorship to be a silent hippo!”
In terms of future plans, Robin has confirmed that the Hilly Helmet Challenge will be happening again next year on 14th August. “Watch this space for more information!” added Robin.
