Well what can I say, 2020 – the most trying of years.
In what was looking like being a very busy and very successful year we “had the rug pulled from under us” by this terrible pandemic and everything that came with it.
We were to start our main events with a district convention which Westbury Lions were to host . We had a whole hotel booked out in Swindon for the weekend in March, with shows and entertainment, seminars and talks on Lion “stuff” – then “Bang” just like that it was gone.
We had many community events planned; the Senior citizens’ party, Easter egg hunt for the kids, Donkey Derby, the vehicle show that was already looking like a total sell out. The 10k run and probably the biggest loss as a community and our final one of the year, and Lions’ way of saying thank you to the town for supporting us throughout the year, and was probably the hardest one to cancel, the Christmas carol float.
Unfortunately all of this was totally beyond our control and though disappointing for the community in general and the Lions club members in particular, we promise we will be back as soon as we are allowed in 2021 and every event we missed last year will be bigger and better than ever. We are even planning a couple of new events to fill our already busy schedule, so watch this space.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Westbury and the surrounding area for the generosity and amazing continuing support that means so much to all of us in the Lions club and without that support we couldn’t help the people in Westbury area that need it. We are always looking to recruit new members or helpers . If you think this is something you could become involved with, then please do get in touch either on our website or our Facebook page
I’d like to, on behalf of Westbury Lions Club, wish all of our supporters and Westbury residents a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
Lion president
Geoff Curtis
