Plans to reopen Westbury’s heritage centre have been given a boost thanks to the town council, local organisations, shops, volunteers and businesses.
Heritage society chair Sally Hendry said, “We really appreciate the help and the interest that so many people have shown in the plans for the new-look heritage centre.
“We are really optimistic we can open with a host of new displays and some favourite artefacts, like the statue of Hercules that made its TV debut on the Repair Shop.
“We hope the range of displays will give people of all ages a chance to trace the history of our town.”
Sited on the first floor of the town library, the heritage centre is on course to open at the beginning of September.
The £5,000 grant agreed by the town council will pay the rent on the premises as well as helping fund new displays, a visual timeline and the finishing touches to the society’s new website www.westburyheritagesociety.org.uk
Westbury Lions came up with a £200 donation which was mirrored by Mendip Developments which are currently developing nine houses off Gibbs Close.
Other help has come in the shape of loans and donations of historic items, while the Imperial Charity has loaned two mannequins. These will be used to display Victorian dresses and other historic costumes.
And historic photographs will be given a high tech airing thanks to Chantry Digital which has also loaned the society a digital screen.
Westbury Heritage Society is always on the lookout for other local historic artefacts either for loans or donations. Currently it is on the lookout for an old school desk and chair. If anyone can help or would like to know more about volunteering, please email info@westburyheritagesociety.org.uk
