THE granddaughter of Westbury Poppy Appeal fundraiser Bill Prior, Kate Prior, is taking on the Welsh Three Peaks challenge in just 24 hours this month to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
Bill, who died last year aged 89, was well known throughout the town for his fundraising efforts as the local Poppy Appeal organiser for over 30 years.
Over the May Bank Holiday weekend, Kate and her husband Tom will be climbing to the peaks of Snowdon, Cader Idris and Pen y Fan – all within 24 hours, to continue supporting the charity which her grandfather did so much for.
“We are completing the challenge to raise money in the name of my grandfather, Bill, who passed away in August,” said Kate. “He spent many years of his life coordinating the Poppy Appeal in Westbury, building up to raising £10,000+ a year and taking part in crazy challenges similar to ours on the May Bank Holiday and we thought this was a fitting tribute in his memory. We might be insane, but we’re going to do it, even if it kills us off!
“He was a big inspiration to myself and my sister, as nothing would ever stop him from reaching his goal!
“Please donate what you can, it’ll keep us going to the summit and back down each mountain.
“We’d love for the Westbury community to raise money for the Royal British Legion once again, but this time in his name.
“We set ourselves a target of £250 initially and that was achieved early on. We have also blown our target of £500 out of the water and are currently aiming for £750, but would love to reach £1000 if we could!”
The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge includes a walking distance of 17 miles (27.4km) and an ascent of 2,334 metres (7,657ft) – equivalent to climbing almost twice up Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.
