A LOCAL play area, which has been closed for 18 months following vandalism, is still waiting for equipment to be replaced and installed. Residents who want to take their children to Hawkeridge Park play area, have complained on social media about its long-term closure.
One mother said that she moved to the area during the Covid-19 lockdown and looked forward to taking her child to the nearby park when it could be opened. However, she says that 18 months on, she is disappointed that she has to walk into Westbury to use a play area in the town.
White Horse News contacted Heywood Parish Council to find out why the repairs have taken so long. Clerk to the parish council, Richard Culverhouse said in a statement, “The equipment was vandalised probably 18 months to 2 years ago. As you know, at the start of the pandemic, all play areas were shut down. I inspected the broken equipment and asked for a quote for repairs which in itself took time. It had been open for a while, but with barriers around that particular equipment, which was then vandalised again to a state that it was very dangerous, so the parish council took the decision to close the park until repairs can take place.
“I am hopeful of a reply from the company doing the work this week, but the problem has been sourcing the parts.”
Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for street scene said, “All play area maintenance is funded by the local community, which ensures a harmonised approach across the county.
“At the request of the parish council, Hawkeridge Park play area is closed over the winter months between October and March. It is, however, currently remaining closed for safety reasons, with works required to the multi play unit.
“We understand that the parish council are actively in the process of arranging these repairs so that it can be reopened.”
