Members of the Westbury Wheelers celebrated the 40th anniversary of the local cycling club by completing 40 consecutive days of activity – all to raise much needed funds for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Over the 40 days members completed a variety of different activities including taking part in park runs, dog walks, resistance and weight training, swimming and of course plenty of bike rides!
“We wanted to do something special to celebrate our 40th anniversary which is this year and we decided to set up a challenge which saw members complete 40 days of activity for each year of the club,” explained Grace Shephard, chair of the Westbury Wheelers.
“We put it out to our members to vote on which charity we should support, and the Air Ambulance was the clear winner as we are all aware of just how vital their role is in our community.”
Debbie Newman, volunteer at Wiltshire Air Ambulance added, “We are so grateful that the Wheelers have donated this money – Wiltshire Air Ambulance flies for you and is funded by you and we are totally reliant on charitable donations in order to keep us going.
“We have to raise about £4m each year which works out at about £11,000 a day, so generous cheques such as this really do go a long way to help us help others.”
New members wanted
Grace added, “We have about 120 members, and we are always looking for more people to join in. We do all sorts of cycling here from mountain biking to road cycling and early starters – there’s something for everyone with any ability. We support anyone that wants to do racing also, and we’d love for more younger members to join.”
