OVER 1,000 people attended Westbury Lions’ Donkey Derby held at White Horse Country Park on Sunday, 2nd June, where just over £4,000 was raised to help the Lions support local causes.
The event featured donkey races, with the Lions’ bookies open to take all bets, and children were able to have a go at being a jockey. In between the donkey races, entertainment for families included fun fair rides, a ‘have a go’ circus area, stalls, family games and performances by Bratton Silver Band.
Speaking at the event, Geoff Curtis, president of Westbury Lions said, “It’s been an absolutely brilliant day! Putting on an event like this means we can help a lot more people in the community. There is a great turnout of people here. We’ve been very lucky with the weather – everyone is happy because the sun is out.”
The overall winner of the final Donkey Derby race, which saw all the winning jockeys from previous races take part, was ten-year-old Pixie Hershbein from Dilton Marsh. Pixie said, “It was absolutely amazing. I’ve never done anything like it before and it was really cool to win.”
