A new wildlife garden is taking shape at Penleigh Park, with paths now in place and an area prepared for wildflower planting.
Westbury Town Council’s rangers have been working to get the project under way, which aims to create a space that encourages wildlife, supports wellbeing and brings the community together.
The project is being delivered through a partnership between Westbury Town Council, Wiltshire Council’s Community Conversations team, local residents and Team10, the voluntary youth group from Westbury Junior School.
The idea came from local residents during a pop-up consultation event in the park in July 2025. Further discussions helped shape plans for a garden that would enhance the park and make it a place for people to enjoy.
Chris Boyes, Community Conversations lead, said, “What finally emerged from a number of conversations over subsequent months was a desire for a garden area that is attractive to wildlife and promotes social interaction and a sense of wellbeing.”
The garden paths have now been installed and a large area prepared for wildflower seeds. Sowing and planting around the centre of the garden are due to take place during October.
Further planting is planned, including trees, bulbs and shrubs in and around the garden and its pathways. Nine trees and bulbs are due to be planted in November by the rangers, Team10 and project volunteers.
A sculpture called Queen Bee will form the centrepiece of the garden. It was chosen following a public vote in the summer, with funding provided by Wiltshire Council’s Public Art Programme.
The sculpture will be unveiled at an opening ceremony in April 2027, with further elements of the garden due to be developed later next year.
Residents are being encouraged to get involved in the project. An event will take place at Penleigh Park on Wednesday 28th October, from 2pm to 4pm, offering crafts, information, hot drinks and the chance to plant spring bulbs.
“We would love to hear from anyone who would like to contribute in any way to this exciting project,” Chris added.
