Two pupils from Matravers School have been selected for prestigious roles as Lord-Lieutenant’s cadets for Wiltshire.
Sam Gainey and Tiegan Murray, who have also recently been appointed head boy and head girl at Matravers, were chosen for two of the four positions available across the county for the coming year.
The appointments, regarded as one of the highest honours a cadet can achieve, were awarded at a ceremony in Devizes Town Hall.
The pair will serve as Lord-Lieutenant’s cadets for 2026-27, with opportunities to support the Lord-Lieutenant at official engagements and ceremonial occasions.
Sam said, “To be nominated for and chosen as Lord-Lieutenant’s cadet of Wiltshire is a massive honour and a commitment I am looking forward to.
“I’ve been a member of the CCF at Matravers since Year 8 and have worked hard to progress through the ranks and have enjoyed the many challenges and opportunities it’s given me, including bronze, silver and gold D of E.”
Sam is a staff sergeant in Matravers’ Army Combined Cadet Force, while Tiegan is a flight sergeant in the school’s RAF section.
“On the night of the award ceremony I was excited beforehand, and the team there put me at ease and everyone there was really friendly,” Sam added.
“It was also really interesting to get an insight into the last year’s cadets’ experiences and see the adult volunteers receive their awards as well.”
The awards ceremony was organised by the Wiltshire Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, with awards presented to reservists, volunteers, companies and cadets.
