The much-loved Horse & Groom pub in Alfred Street is set to close following two failed attempts to sell the business.
The pub which was reopened in April 2013 by the late experienced publican and hotelier Bob Musker with his wife Carol quickly became a community hub. Under their management, the Horse & Groom evolved into a thriving pub, restaurant, and events venue. The couple also opened a successful B&B across the road.
Regular events such as Sunday roasts, live music, the annual Boxing Day dog walk, and marquee celebrations for weddings and Christmas parties were a significant draw. The pub also became a meeting spot for local groups, including the Westbury Wheelers Cycling Group and the Westbury Lions, while supporting skittles and crib teams.
The Horse & Groom’s success was attributed to Bob’s vision and Carol’s unwavering support. However, in 2022, Bob was diagnosed with a serious illness and passed away in February 2023. Carol took on the challenge of running the pub alone but decided to sell it after Bob’s passing.
Despite finding two potential buyers, both deals fell through at the last moment, leaving Carol with no option but to close the business.
Speaking about the closure, Carol said, “This has been one of the most difficult decisions in my life, especially with the memory of my late husband Bob and everything he put into making this such a success. I want to thank all my loyal, hardworking and talented staff for their wonderful support, especially over the past two years. I especially want to thank the simply lovely customers, many of whom have become like family, for their support over the years and for helping to make the Horse & Groom such a great little pub. It was mine and Bob’s ambition to create a happy, safe place to drink and eat in Westbury… I believe we did just that. I will miss you all.”
