STUDENTS at Matravers School recently held their own quiz night and raised nearly £280 to contribute to the school’s link with Gunjur, Gambia.
The quiz night was organised by eight students from the year 13 business studies BTEC class as part of an assignment. With the help of their teacher Barney Clarke, the team ran a successful quiz for 45 students and members of staff.
The team raised money from ticket sales, donations on the night, and a raffle, with the prizes donated by The New Champion Restaurant, Morrisons, Bath Bakery, and All Sorts Sweetshop.
Appointed operations manager Hollie Goff said, “The evening was very successful! We had 45 people turn up who generously donated on the door as they entered.
“The night ran smoothly, with only one hiccup when the board stopped working so our business teacher had to fix it in time for us to start; apart from that nothing else happened and everyone enjoyed the evening!
“We felt that a quiz night was the most appropriate form of raising money as we could involve students and teachers working together in a competitive environment.
“Although it caused a lot of stress for us as a team, we looked forward to hosting the night and raising as much money as possible. In previous years, sixth-formers have been invited to fly out to Gunjur during the February holiday to create a link between young people in Westbury and Gunjur, to experience the culture and send over aid with them.
“Previously, the school has raised enough money to have a water pump installed into the local school in Gunjur so that all children could have water during school hours.
“Over the last two years we haven’t been able to go to The Gambia due to the Ebola outbreak. This sparked our idea to raise the money for Gambia so that when we can finally return we will have more resources to take with us.
“During the organisation of the event there were a few stressful moments and it was difficult when people didn’t agree, but as a class we enjoyed the whole process from the start up until the end of the quiz.
“This was our first event, and everyone in the team can agree that our favourite part was actually hosting the quiz and knowing that all our hard work paid off!”
Hollie worked alongside classmates Tia McRae, Rhiannon Dally, Saskia Rodriguez, Georgie Seals, Henry Dowler, Bradley Gill, and Will Kettlety.
