WESTBURY Town Council is encouraging drivers to not be put off by A350 road closures and still visit the town centre.
Resurfacing works along the A350 in Westbury – the main road through the town – began last week as part of three phases over a four-week period. News of the closures sparked outrage in the town last month from local businesses and town councillors, who complained about the lack of notice given by Wiltshire Council.
However, the town council is now offering reassurance that disruption for local businesses will be kept to a minimum, and that with ‘lighter traffic’ passing through the town, they say now is the perfect time to visit Westbury.
Clerk for the town council, Deborah Urch, told White Horse News, “Resurfacing works have begun on the A350 in Westbury, as planned, and the town council wants to remind all residents and visitors that it is very much ‘business as usual’ for Westbury.
“Disruption to residents and businesses will be kept to a minimum, with local diversions in place for light traffic and affected bus routes and a diversion for HGVs via the A36. Diversion routes are clearly signed both within Westbury and further afield, as well as signs stating that businesses are open as usual.
“The only time access to the High Street will be restricted is when the works are immediately at the entrance of the High Street (Haynes Road). At all other times, access will be maintained.
“Wiltshire Council has a dedicated page on its website with information about the resurfacing works and diversion routes and this will be updated regularly. The town council is also publishing information via our website and Facebook page.
“We do understand that residents and businesses alike were concerned about the impact of the roadworks and we are in regular communication with all parties involved to keep disruption to a minimum and to get the message out that we are still open for business.
“Westbury has some fantastic independent shops and restaurants, as well as the usual town-based retailers. With traffic lighter that usual, all businesses operating as normal and the Westbury Festival just started, now is the perfect time to visit Westbury.”
