There only seemed likely to be one winner when Westbury’s Joe Cavalla, Jordon Matthews, Shav Allen and Dan Moore were running their hosts ragged in the opening 20 minutes.
However, a rash challenge by keeper Charlie Heydon gifted Backwell a penalty and they never looked back!
United’s attackers played with real verve and pace early on with Cavalla forcing Lewis Coombes into a smart save, then excellent play by Matthews setting up Allen whose shot from an acute angle clipped Coombes’ right hand post! Cavalla then combined with Grant Gunning but his low ball was excellently defended in the 6 yard box.
The turning point came when Sam Skidmore broke through and Heydon advanced but fouled the home striker inside the area; Ryan Crouch scored easily from the spot to make it 1-0.
Westbury failed to get control of winger Conor Biggins and it was he who made the difference before half time, firstly setting up Harry Walker for the 2nd goal then cruising through and finishing the 3rd.
The 2nd half was a surprising no show by United and they were unable to get themselves back into the game, something they have done previously when trailing heavily at half time. Home keeper Coombes was a virtual spectator until Levi Wood and Allen had late long range attempts.
Meanwhile Biggins turned in a man of the match performance; he was fouled for the free kick which Adam Crooks rifled in to make it 4-0 and, after missing several chances including hitting the crossbar, he finished off a lovely move for the final goal then wasted a few more attempts at scoring a hattrick.
