A WESTBURY woman is launching her book about foxes this weekend at a bookshop in Frome.
Jane Russ, a keen wildlife conservationist, has written ‘The Fox Book’ to explore the nature of foxes and the history of how the animals are viewed by society.
She will launch the book this Sunday, 2nd April, at Hunting Raven Books on Cheap Street in Frome. Jane will then give a talk about the book and another of hers, ‘The Hare Book’, on Tuesday 11th April from 7pm.
Jane moved to Westbury in 2015 and has since become the hare specialist for the Imber Conservation Trust. She will be running for county council election in the town next month.
Jane said, “Foxy tales are familiar to us all, whether it be Aesop’s tale of The Fox and the Grapes, medieval stories of Reynard the Fox or Beatrix Potter’s Mr Tod.
“Foxes have become such a part of the urban landscape, I thought it time they had a book to themselves. This book has been fascinating to write, and the myth and legend section in particular was so interesting; I never knew that the Japanese hold them dear as religious icons to this day.”
The Fox Book looks at the fox in nature around the world, myth, legend, art, literature, folklore and history. It costs £9.99 and includes photographs, paintings, poems, sculptures and art, and tackles the issue of fox-hunting.
Jane will be hoping to meet and chat to people at the book launch on Sunday from 11am.
