WESTBURY Town Council will light a beacon near the White Horse, and the bells of All Saints Church will ring out on Friday 8th May to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
The ceremony will be one of more than 100 across the country held to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe in 1945.
The beacon will be lit by Westbury Mayor, cllr Christine Mitchell at approximately 9.30pm on Friday 8th May.
A spokesperson for Westbury Town Council said, “Peace broke out on this day 70 years ago and brought an end to nearly six years of war across Europe. We must not let this day pass without reflecting on the sacrifice, courage and determination of the people who saw us through this dark period.
“It is fitting that we should celebrate them and commemorate this historic anniversary once more through the lighting of beacons.
“A chain of more than 100 beacons will be lit across the length and breadth of the country to celebrate light emerging from the darkness of war, and the triumph of the human spirit. A chance to remember lost loved ones and the sacrifices they made to secure the peace we all enjoy today.”
