Sat 14th August – Uhlsport Hellenic League Bishops Cleeve 5 Westbury United 2
Westbury United travelled up to former Southern League outfit Bishop’s Cleeve’s Kayte Lane ground for the first time since the 2010 FA Cup meeting between the pair which ended with a 4-0 win to Bishop’s Cleeve – Saturday’s game wasn’t much better.
Westbury started strongly with two early chances for Joe Stradling – the first was after some great build-up play down the right by Steve Hulbert and Francois Allen. Josh Ferguson crafted a chance for himself as he received the ball 25 yards from goal, with his first touch he flicked it up and then powered a left-footed volley wide of the post.
Slack opened the scoring for the home team on the 25 minute mark, ghosting in at the back post to finish. Biddiscombe had a shot off target before Bishop’s Cleeve doubled their lead with a powerful drive from inside the area by Watts on 33 minutes.
It was nearly three a few minutes later but Bowden saved well and Bole was on hand to clear off the line. The score was 2-0 to the home team at half time.
Griffiths had the first shot on target in the second half before Bishop’s Cleeve extended their lead, a cross from wide right was headed home by Rhodes. Minutes later Watts got his second and Bishop’s Cleeve’s fourth of the game, a shot that was going well wide but Watts was on hand to guide it into the net.
On the 76-minute Mark Watts got his hat trick, the game was wide open with Westbury trying to get something and refusing to lay down only to be caught and the score became 5-0.
Bole got Westbury a deserved goal, King swung in a left-footed free kick for Bole to head home from five yards. Demkiv got himself on the scoresheet with speedy counter attack and smart finish to make the final score 5-2.
