This was the Cory Band’s 14th appearance in one of the ‘Best of British Brass Concerts’.
Lucy Scott, president of the Bratton Silver Band said, “When the band initially proposed staging the ‘Best of British Concerts’ we had a vision of aiming high in the calibre of musicianship which we wished to feature in Wiltshire.
“Very few members of the band would have envisaged that they would be presenting the reigning national champions, european champions and brass band ranked number 1 in the world.”
“Musical director, Philip Harper led the band, he is one of the most dynamic brass band conductors and the manner in which he interacts with the hugely talented instrumentalists draws out the very best from each and every one of them, producing music of the very highest standard.
“The concert soloists were well applauded by the enthusiastic audience. These included Steve Stewart, soprano cornet playing the Third Movement from Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, Tom Hutchinson, principal cornet performing Tico Tico, Owen Farr, principal tenor horn playing Autumn Leaves, Chris Thomas, principal trombone playing Perfect Day, Richard Davies, flugel horn playing Alfie and Dave Mitchell Cory’s versatile percussionist who treated the audience to a vocal solo ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the ‘Sound of Music’.
“To conclude, the Finale from Piano Concerto No. 3 Sergei Rachmaninov arranged by the band’s musical director, Philip Harper, was truly impressive showing the amazing height of musicianship which the Cory Band can reach. The concert at the Wiltshire Music Centre in Bradford on Avon was a sell-out – not surprising when such a prestigious brass band was performing!”
