AS part of Lent, Holy Trinity Church in Dilton Marsh will welcome internationally renowned Bridge Quartet and actor Christopher Kent to perform and narrate Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross on Friday 31st March at 7pm.
The day of the concert marks the 291st anniversary of the birth of Haydn and it will recreate his original plan by interspersing the music with readings of classic and contemporary poetry, including works by Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Mary Oliver and Philip Larkin.
They will be read by the acclaimed author and actor Christopher Kent – some of you may remember the moving recital of poems and piano music, Never Such Innocence, which Christopher brought to nearby Sutton Veny in 2018.
Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross was originally commissioned by the Bishop of Cadiz in 1786 for the Good Friday Service at the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva. The Bridge Quartet programme was performed to acclaim in London during Easter 2019 and revised for a memorable live-streamed performance on Good Friday 2021. It had its first Wiltshire performance at Boyton Church in the Wylye Valley in April 2022.
The concert will run for 75 minutes with no break. Tickets are priced at £12 and include a glass of wine or juice. To place an order, please contact William Mitchell on boyton71w@gmail.com with the number of seats required.
Tickets are also available in church from Garth Brocksopp on 01373 822414. This is a non-for-profit event with all proceeds being donated to Holy Trinity Church.
