A WESTBURY petition, which challenges Wiltshire Council’s car parking policy, will be presented to Wiltshire Council next week.
The petition, which was launched by Westbury Town Council and the Westbury Chamber of Commerce earlier this year, has been signed by 3,500 people. Since free one-hour parking was scrapped by Wiltshire Council in April last year, traders, shoppers, and councillors have protested, saying there are detrimental effects that the charges are having on the town. And town councillor Bill Braid, who is chair of the town council’s car parks working group, says the strength of feeling has not diminished over time. He said, “3,500 signatures is better than we had hoped for, we thought we’d be lucky to get to 3,000. I think the strength of feeling in Westbury is very, very strong. I had the shopkeepers tell me that they only had to show the petition and people would sign immediately. People were seeing the notice in the window and going into shops just to sign it.”The petition will be presented at the meeting of the Westbury Area Board on Thursday 19th April at the Laverton, Bratton Road. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start.
