Chapmanslade Church of England Primary School has received £6,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a project on the heritage of Chapmanslade.
Awarded through HLF’s First World War then and now programme, the project will focus on the impact of the First World War on the village.
To mark the Centenary of the First World War, the project will enable children to visit the Wiltshire and Swindon Heritage Centre and the local war memorial to learn about those who died and the impact of the war on the village.
With help from professionals from Music In Action, the children will then create a piece of music to be performed to express what they have learned. Children will set up their own website where films and photographs of their learning and the performance can be seen at 2.00pm and 6.00pm on Friday 17th July at the school.
Commenting on the award, headteacher Berkeley Basinger Adams said, “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the children can’t wait to get started on this exciting project.”
Nerys Watts, head of HLF South West said, “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond.
“We’re pleased to support this project which will cast a local perspective on the conflict, and ensure the future custodians of our heritage can broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world, and keep preserved Chapmanslade’s unique memory of the First World War.”
