Children’s author visits village primary school

DURING their ‘literary week’ Bratton Primary School invited author Hannah Shaw to lead  writing workshops and tell the children about her published books.

As part of a whole school enrichment week, Hannah Shaw, author of ‘Errol’ and ‘School for Bandits’ visited the school on Tuesday 6th March, to run writing workshops with every class.

Hannah spoke to the children, helping them with inspiration for their own writing and enthused to them the joy of reading. She said, “I really enjoyed visiting Bratton Primary School. The children were enthusiastic and engaged.  I talked about the process of making a picture book. The aim was to inspire their creative writing, as well as passing on some illustration tips and skills.”

Headteacher, Ian Bolton  said, “It was a pleasure to welcome Hannah along to Bratton School as part of our literary week. She kindly ran exciting, creative workshops with all classes during her day with us. In addition, we also had 11 children from Matravers School join us for one of the workshops.

“We do a lot of English at our school as part of the national curriculum, however, it’s good to do this enrichment week as something extra for the children to enjoy.

“This certainly helps to improve their reading and writing in class. We also like to teach our pupils how to communicate effectively and speak correctly, as this is such a vital skill.”

Other events during the school’s ‘literary week’ included a poetry recital evening where teachers from Matravers School were invited, class reading and writing swaps, short story writing events and art workshops with a local artist, all looking to make the children enthusiastic about the world of literature.
