A children’s brass band established last year to promote the local banding tradition among young people has been shortlisted for a prestigious Classic FM Award.
Bratton Brass Roots has been shortlisted for the ‘Best Music Learning Initiative’ award, a national award which recognises efforts to bring music to children and equip them with the skills to become the talented musicians of tomorrow.
Led by Lydia Hills and supported by a team of volunteers, Bratton Brass Roots is part of the Bratton Community Brass Bands organisation, which also includes Bratton Silver Band and Bratton Brass Band.
Meeting weekly at the Bratton Church Institute, the band has already achieved several milestones, including an ABRSM Music Medal Award, hosting a three-day summer school, and participating in the ‘Proms in the Playground,’ a national initiative that brings performances to local primary schools to inspire children to learn brass instruments. Following a successful open day, they have welcomed 12 new learners who will start this month.
Lucy Scott, the band’s engagement coordinator, said, “Bratton has been fortunate in having a brass band for over 160 years and stemming from the long-lasting community tradition of brass bands, this children’s beginner brass band makes it possible for young people to participate in the banding tradition, in a fun and supportive group that is affordable to families.”
The Brass Roots group was established in October 2023, with support from the national music organisations Brass Bands England and Making Music, as well as Westbury Area Board and Westbury Lions who gave grants towards the purchase of musical instruments and music.
Voting for the award closes on Wednesday 18th September, you can vote for Bratton Brass Roots at https://win.classicfm.com/teacher-of-the-year-2024/.
“They need your votes to win their category in the Classic FM Awards in order to receive £3,000 which will help them to continue their amazing work! Don’t miss your chance to help your local community group shine!” added Lucy.
