MOSAIC workshops, funded by Westbury Town Council and run by artist Ria-Jane Cann, have been available over the summer to create artwork to be used in a phone box exhibition in the Market Place.
Last year the town council adopted the K6 red kiosk phone box, which will be transformed into an art exhibition.
A competition was held by the town council for children in the town and surrounding villages to design a shield to be used in the exhibition. The winning design was by 5 year-old Orla Pearce of Dilton Primary School and chosen by Westbury mayor, cllr Mike Sutton.
Ria-Jane Cann, an artist who runs Fragmented Art mosaic art parties, has been working with children in two workshops over the summer in The Laverton to create the winning design and the Westbury Town Council crest using mosaic tiles.
She said, “The workshops have worked really well and it was lovely for the town council to fund them. They said it has really brought the lovely building to life having the children here taking part in the workshops.
“The phone box will be converted into an art exhibition that will feature people’s art on a rolling basis for the people of Westbury to see. The town crest will be used on the floor of the exhibition and Orla’s piece on one of the spaces inside.
“I have also been working on a mosaic piece for Leigh Park Community Centre which is due to be put up in a few weeks.”
Westbury Town Council said, “The workshops were very successful and enjoyed by all that attended. Thank you to Ria from Fragmented Art and all the children that helped create the two mosaics. We hope to begin work on the phone box soon and will share updates via our Website and Facebook.”
