Providence Chapel, Dilton Marsh, is holding its anniversary services this weekend, but this year there will be another significant milestone. All being well, building works that have been ongoing for the last 14 months will be complete and those attending will be able to see first-hand what has been done.
Andrew Stone, one of the trustees, told White Horse News, “For years, the hall and ancillary rooms have suffered badly from damp. Being a listed building, the work to address this had to receive planning permission from Wiltshire Council. Tackling the damp uncovered all kinds of other problems which had to be dealt with at the same time – a rotten wooden floor, old wiring, guttering issues and more. Even old fireplaces were discovered under the old plaster when it was removed.
“The work was originally due to take three months, but it has taken 14 months because of all the extra problems. We’re thankful to God for giving us wonderful contractors to do the work – Complete Preservation, Mark Norris Electricians, Steve Arnold Decorating, Allsop Carpets and Dan Gmaj; we’re also thankful that most of the work was done when we weren’t able to use the building even if we’d wanted to, so it was less disruptive than it might have been.
“With the work complete, the Bright Sparks toddler group and One Way Club (for primary school children) will be able to re-start for the new term.
“The anniversary will mark the 211th year since the chapel opened. The main service is on Saturday 4th September at 4pm and Mike Leaves will be preaching. Mike was the pastor of the church from 1987 to 1993 before moving to a church in Swansea for 25 years; he is now the pastor of Grace Community Church in Saltford.
