LATER this month, the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) will be hosting a comedy night to continue raising funds for the positron scanner that is now on its way to the RUH.
The BCUSG’s positron scanner campaign is nearing its goal after two years, as the deal for the unit was secured when the £1m mark was passed by the group this year. This means the hospital is now preparing to install the new scanner, but the BCUSG must push hard to raise the final £200,000.
The group will be teaming up with local Italian restaurant Zia Pizza to host a comedy night at Leigh Park Community Centre on Sunday 22nd February.
The event will start at 7pm and promises something for everyone, with a mix of comedy and magic on the cards.
The night will be hosted by Sal Monello, who runs a monthly comedy night at the The Bell in Rode, and performers Mark Hurman, Wayne the Weird, and Danny Buckler will be appearing on the bill along with comedian Danny Buckler who has previously appeared alongside Jon Richardson and Ricky Gervais, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a number of times.
The Charity were thrilled at the idea of a comedy night, which is a first for the local fundraising branch.
Fundraiser for Westbury Marie Brichard-Parsons said, “The comedy night should be a really good night, we’ve sold quite a few tickets already but I’m hoping to sell twice as many!
“We enjoy trying new ways of fundraising – our collections in shops provide a steady income but it’s fun to do events like this.
“The campaign has run so smoothly since we started, and it’s all thanks to the amazing efforts of our volunteers. There are no paid members of the BCUSG charity and all fundraising is done on top of our day jobs. When we started £1.2m seemed like a huge milestone that we’d never reach but thanks to all our fundraisers and local support we’re nearly there! I’m confident we can raise the final £200,000 in time and have the scanner up and running by the end of the year.”
The positron scanner for which the group has been raising money can produce scans which allow consultants to monitor changes in the activity of cancerous cells. Statistics show that one third of treatments are modified following positron scans.
The comedy night will start at 7pm on Sunday 22nd February; tickets are £15 per person and include a ploughman’s supper prepared by Zia Pizza. A licensed bar will also be available. For more information and tickets please visit Zia Pizza or call Marie on 07709 912661.
