IT’S official, Westbury is a town of pet lovers! Nominations for the ‘Cutest Pet’ competition have ‘pawed’ in and now readers are being asked to cast their vote on which pet should be crowned the winner.

The first ever White Horse News ‘Cutest Pet’ competition has been organised to celebrate National Pet Month, which aims to raise awareness of responsible pet ownership and encourage fundraising for the nation’s needy pets.

To vote for which pet you think is the cutest, take a look at all the nominations on pages WILTSHIRE Wildlife Trust’s waste education team are visiting Westbury this week to explore the idea of bringing a ‘Community Fridge’ to the area.

The team will be at Mad Hatters Cafe in Westbury High Street this Thursday, 12th April, from 12-2pm, looking for local residents interested in getting involved in a project to reduce food waste in the town.

Jessica Thimbleby, community engagement officer at the Trust said, “Westbury was suggested to us as a possible venue for a ‘Community Fridge’ and so we’re trying to find out if residents are interested and would like to help with this simple, but effective solution, to redistribute food that would otherwise be wasted.

A ‘Community Fridge’ is a refrigerator located in a public space that enables food to be shared within a community that would have instead been thrown away.

The UK’s first ‘Community Fridge’ was launched in nearby Frome in 2016, saving more than 20,000 food items from landfill in its first year. The project attracted national media attention and was featured on Channel 4’s ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast’, inspiring many other community fridges to open across the country. The fridge now regularly collects around 4,000 items each month, receiving food donations from local businesses, retailers and the community. In 2017, Frome’s Community Fridge saved nearly 24 tonnes of food, the equivalent in weight to around three African elephants.

Jessica added, “It’s a fantastic initiative that tackles food waste and stops fresh food ending up in the bin. We hope lots of residents will pop in and see us in Mad Hatters between midday – 2pm to find out more about the project, how you can get involved and enjoy some yummy waste-free treats.”

The ‘yummy treats’ will come courtesy of a free ‘waste free buffet’ cooked up by the waste team using food that has been saved from going to landfill.

This is a free event with everyone welcome. For information contact the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust’s Waste Team on 01380 736077 or rethink     rubbish@wiltshirewildlife.org.

. Then simply email the number and name of your choice to news@white horsenews.co.uk and please include your own name and address. Only one vote is allowed per person, so choose wisely! To be eligible to vote you must live in the White Horse News distribution area. The deadline for voting is 3pm next Wednesday, 18th April.

For the winning owner, Pets Corner in Warminster has kindly donated a prize of a pet hamper. A story and photograph of the winning pet and its owner will also be featured in White Horse News.
