WESTBURY Town Council is committed to becoming ‘litter free’ in 2020 as they encourage the local community to get on board and help protect the environment.
The council say this is the first step following their climate emergency declaration earlier this month. They will continue to organise town litter pick days under their ‘Keep Westbury Tidy’ scheme, one of which was held last weekend and they are urging all local people to ‘do their bit’ by putting their own litter in a bin and picking up just one extra piece of litter.
And in addition, they are holding a competition for local schoolchildren to design a poster to place around the town, highlighting the effects of litter.
Town councillors also agreed to write to local businesses that generate litter, such as supermarkets and takeaways, to encourage them to keep their areas free from litter.
They said, “We all want to live in a town where litter is a thing of the past, where we end waste and improve the places we inhabit.
“Unfortunately, recent surveys have shown that litter is on the increase and so the town council wants to encourage everyone to be a ‘litter hero’.
“In order to create the clean parks, footpaths and streets we all want to see, we all have to do our bit and picking up a single piece of litter or putting your litter in the bin could be the first step.”
To kick this off, Westbury Town Council is running a competition and asking our school children to create a poster with a message for all, to help improve the environment on our own doorstep by eliminating litter and creating a great place to live.
The competition is open to all schoolchildren who live or go to school in Westbury. A winner will be chosen from each of the three age groups of 5-9 years, 10-13 years and 14+ years and those posters will be placed on refuse bins, notice boards etc. to encourage everyone to bin their rubbish. Entry forms will be sent to each of the schools and will be available on the council’s website. The closing date is Saturday 29th February.
“We are challenging the children to be inventive in their designs and hope that the older age group in particular will produce designs with crisp, sharp mes-sages that resonates with their age group and older,” said the council.
Winning designs will be shown on the town council website.
The next town tidy day will be on Saturday 21st March, which will be part of the national Great British Spring Clean. This will take place 10am-12noon and the locations and further details will be confirmed nearer the time, shared on their website and via social media.
