Concern over town centre street ‘pitted with potholes’

Residents have raised concerns about the condition of Edward Street, describing it as ‘pitted with potholes’ and highlighting issues with the surrounding pavements. 

The street, located near Morrisons, is said to be in a deteriorating state, with uneven surfaces and broken slabs posing safety risks. 

Westbury resident Brenda Wise said, “Edward Street is looking very pitted now. Road markings there need addressing too. There are trip hazards due to uneven and broken pavements, which need work done to improve them for the safety of our elderly pedestrians, along with mums with pushchairs and toddlers.” 

Brenda contacted her local councillor Boaz Barry, who has since raised the issue with Wiltshire Council.  

Cllr Barry said, “Edward Street is more than just a back road – it’s a key pedestrian route from the High Street, used daily for access to shops, appointments and services. 

“Unfortunately, both the road and pavements are in poor condition, with uneven slabs and potholes creating serious safety risks. Mobility and safety must be a priority here. I will be submitting a report and hope to see improvements soon.” 

Cllr Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for Highways, said, “We have not received any reports of potholes on Edward Street in Westbury. We conduct regular inspections to identify any defects and will also assess any issues reported by the public.  

We encourage residents and councillors to report any potholes they notice in Wiltshire using our MyWilts app. This allows our officers to investigate further, in accordance with our Highways Safety Inspection Manual.”
