Plans to convert a former takeaway in the Market Place into additional residential accommodation have been approved by Wiltshire Council.
The Grade II listed building at 25 and 26 Market Place, currently divided into a retail unit with residential dwellings above and to the rear, has been vacant since 2019 following the relocation of a takeaway business.
The proposal will repurpose the vacant retail space into residential accommodation, expanding the existing living quarters on the ground floor.
Despite efforts to attract shop developers, the retail unit had generated ‘no significant interest,’ according to the property agents.
The heritage statement reveals that the Grade II listed building, originally two separate properties constructed in the 18th century and later combined, has had various uses over the decades. It functioned as a convenience store in the 1970s and 1980s before becoming a takeaway in the 1990s.
Westbury Town Council had previously objected to the plans, citing concerns over inadequate parking provision for the expanded residential accommodation.
