Eight members of a village football club have walked more than 100km each in June to raise funds for a children’s hospice, after a visit that left a lasting impact.
Members of Dilton Marsh Wanderers FC took on the challenge throughout the month, raising over £1,000 for Children’s Hospice South West, which supports babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families.
The effort followed a visit to Charlton Farm Hospice after a charity football match, where players and management were presented with first-hand insight into the care provided to families.
Manager Steve Wyatt, treasurer Rachael Flanagan, captain Dale Youens-Rowland, coach Boe Lawes, photographer Martin Pearce and players Dan Bryce, Matt Gittins and Aaron Knowles all took part in the fundraising challenge.
The club had already raised more than £700 through a match against Bishop Cannings FC, before deciding to continue their support for the charity.
“It was the visit to Charlton Farm that really stayed with everyone,” said Martin.
“CHSW run a number of digital fundraising events and in June they were doing complete 100k in one month, which was ideal for Dilton Marsh Wanderers to get involved with.
“Not only does it raise money for a wonderful charity, but it also helps with fitness levels before the start of next season.”
The total raised has now passed £1,000, enough to fund a Christmas stay for a family at the hospice.
