Westbury Ladies v Plymstock Albion Oaks Ladies
Sunday 14th Sept
The paragliders soared above Knott Field on a scorcher of a Sunday as Westbury Ladies took to the field for their first home game of the season. The game saw the welcome return of Cara Fitzgerald, from a shoulder injury.
From kick off, the supporters were treated to some fantastic rugby from both teams. Westbury Ladies first try came from captain Anna Hemingway; Lana Plummer missing the conversion from wide, making the score 5-0.
Westbury continued to make some good breaks but struggled to match Plymstock’s power in the scrums. With some adjustments though, Westbury were able to steady the scrums but couldn’t stop Plymstock scoring, bringing the score to 5-5. This remained the score at half time.
The Ladies started the second half camped in the Plymstock 22, piling on the pressure. Plymstock were forced to try and clear their lines from a breakdown but the kick was collected cleanly by Sam Eley who made the most of the space on the far side, crossing the line to make the score 10-5. Conversion missed by Lana Plummer.
The resulting kick off was collected well by the Westbury Ladies pack, putting some good phase play together. A blind side move from a scrum that was now being dominated by the Westbury front 5 saw Lana Plummer sent into a gap and crashing through a tackle over the line. She duly converted to make the score 17-5. A line out that went slightly awry was capitalised on by Marguerite Roger to score. Lana Plummer converted, making the score 24-5.
With 10 minutes to play, Plymstock scored a try, making the score 24-10 before Marguerite Roger sprinted 50 metres down the wing and dot the ball down for her second and final try for Westbury Ladies before her return to France. This was converted by Lana Plummer making the final score 31-10.
Maisie Chester and Chantelle Rugman were awarded forward and back of the match; Marguerite Roger was the Westbury Men player of the match and Sally Martin was awarded sponsors’ player of the match by Westbury Conservative Club.
The ladies have a few weeks off now before they return to league action away at North Petherton on 6th October.
