WESTBURY United players have written themselves into the history books – securing silverware for the club for the first time since the Second World War – after beating Swindon Town 3-0 in a thrilling final of the Wiltshire Premier Shield on Tuesday 9th May.
Goals from Ryan Bole, Joe Stradling, and a penalty from Stevie Hulbert secured victory for Westbury United at the County Ground in Swindon. The joint-managers of Westbury United, Ricky Hulbert and Lewis Porter, spoke to White Horse News about the victory.
Lewis Porter said, “These players have shown their best form against the bigger teams and this game was no exception. Swindon Town were always going to dominate the ball as they are professional football players, but our boys defended really well, and they showed their tough side.
“This club has achieved so much this season – to finish tenth in our first Southern League season was one thing, but to win the cup after such a long wait was the cherry on the cake. This is a reward for all the hard work and commitment the players have put in on the pitch. A big thank you as well to all the guys behind the scenes who helped the players reach the final.
Incredible support
“The support we had at the County Ground was just incredible; so many fans turned up to cheer us on and I had my family there, so it was a really special night for myself. Thank you for everyone that came out to support us! We didn’t celebrate too hard on the night as it was a Tuesday, but the squad is off to Portugal for a few days, so I’m sure we will all be making the most of the good weather and celebrating then!”
‘Unbelievable!’
Ricky Hulbert added, “It’s unbelievable! The lads fully deserve it. We’ve had a tough run to the final and it was a tough game today against a full-time outfit – they put a young squad out, but they are unbelievable players, they move the ball fast and are very fit lads. To keep a clean sheet tonight was fantastic. Our lads fully deserve it. They’ve had a great season this year – 10th in the Southern League in our first year and to top it off with this win is unbelievable.
