Cupcakes, cookies and an ultimate chocolate cake impressed the judges at a special Great British Bake Off event hosted by Westbury Lions.
Budding bakers and talented cake makers brought their creations along to Westbury Paragon Hall to be judged by professional baker Jo Corteen and Lions’ President Jarvis Macdonald.
Thomas Crickett won in the under 9s category, Jack Waller won in the over 9s category, Charlotte Whitehead won the technical challenge, Alexandra Young won the showstopper award and ten-year-old Amy Wheeler won the special judges’ award.
Lions’ president, Jarvis MacDonald said, “I could think of worse ways of spending Saturday morning than eating lots of lovely cakes!
“The cakes are super and I was very impressed with them all. The effort that has gone into making them is superb and they should all be very proud.
“We will definitely be doing it again next year and will probably open it up to people outside the town.”
Jo Corteen who runs The Fairy Cakery in Melksham said, “I was very impressed with all the cakes. They were all delicious and I was pleasantly surprised by some of the ingredients that the children had used. The decorations were also very impressive.”
Amy Wheeler who won the special judges’ award with her marshmallow and chocolate smiley face cookies said, “I wanted to make the judges smile so I put a big smiley face on the cookies. I’m very happy that I won the special ‘Bake for Sport Relief’ apron and I will be taking it into school on Monday to show all my friends.”
Charlotte Whitehead, whose bunny-themed carrot cake cupcakes impressed the judges said, “I really didn’t think I would win, so I am very pleased. I only started baking in December and this was the first time I had made these particular cupcakes. I’ve had lots of compliments which is lovely.”
Alexandra Young, who won the showstopper award said, “I do bake a lot but only for friends and family. I’m so pleased to have won two hours’ tutorial with Jo. Hopefully I will learn some new skills and then come back next year with another winning cake.
“I would definitely encourage people to enter the competition next year. Aside from being a chance to meet other people who live in the town who you probably pass on the street every day, it’s an opportunity to support the Lions Club and say thank you to them for everything they do in the community. I don’t think many people realise how much they do for the town.”
Prizes were donated by Davies of Westbury, Antoinette’s Wardrobe and The Fairy Cakery.
