A singer from Dilton Marsh wowed audiences during his recent appearance on ITV’s hit show The Voice UK.
Harry James, a former pupil of Dilton Marsh Primary and Matravers School, performed Hold Me Closer for the show’s judges: will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones, LeAnn Rimes and McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, in an episode aired on Saturday, 12th October.
During the blind auditions, LeAnn Rimes was so impressed by Harry’s performance that she turned her chair, sending him through to the call-backs stage. Although he didn’t progress further, the judge praised his unique rendition of the song, saying, “What a cool version of that song. I think that says a lot about your artistry.”
Reflecting on the experience, Harry said, “What a genuinely amazing, wholesome experience I had throughout. I met the most incredible, supportive people both on and off screen, and the most unbelievably talented and hard-working singers and artists. I was undecided on whether to take the opportunity, but I’m so glad I did. It was such a unique experience and one that I will never forget.”
At 28, Harry has been singing for as long as he can remember, with his first taste of performing coming during his final year at secondary school. “I was obviously pretty ropey, but the experience really gave me a sensation that I enjoyed and a big sense of fulfilment. This sparked me to study music at City of Bath College and join my first band! Now, around 10 years on, I’m currently living in Bristol, writing, releasing, and performing my own music under the name ‘Harmer Jays.’”
His passion for music continues to drive him. “Creating music that can resonate with people and mean something to someone out there is beautiful and something I continue to strive for. The feeling of performing in front of an audience still gives me the buzz, and that’s why I continue to do it,” he added.
Harry’s mother, Deb Whitefield Wiltshire, said, “I am so proud of Harry for taking this opportunity. The whole journey has been such a wonderful experience for us, and the family as a whole. I was very nervous when he walked out onto the stage, especially when the whole place was plunged into silence, but when he started singing, it was a magical feeling for me. Harry has put a lot of hard work and dedication into developing his voice and his own music. I know this has been a really positive experience for him and so fulfilling for him to be able to share it with people.”
