Drivers stopped during horse safety operation in Dilton Marsh

A police initiative aimed at improving safety for horse riders saw 24 drivers stopped and given advice in Dilton Marsh. 

Wiltshire Police launched Operation Close Pass on Thursday 10th September, carrying out the targeted road safety operation near Fairfield College. 

Officers and volunteers from the British Horse Society identified vehicles passing horses too closely or too quickly and stopped drivers to provide advice and education. 

All 24 drivers stopped during the operation were dealt with through education and advice. 

Officers reported concerns including drivers approaching horses too quickly or too closely, failing to leave the recommended two metres when overtaking and accelerating or cutting back in front of horses after passing. 

The Highway Code advises motorists to slow to no more than 10mph when passing horses, leave at least two metres of space and be prepared to stop if necessary. 

Wiltshire Police said the operation was aimed at improving understanding among motorists and reducing the risk of serious collisions involving horses and riders. 

Chief Constable Catherine Roper said, “Wiltshire has a strong and valued equestrian community, with many people using our roads to ride horses every day. Every road user has a responsibility to help keep others safe. 

“Passing a horse too closely or at speed can have devastating consequences. Horses can react unpredictably when startled, placing riders, drivers and other road users at risk. 

“The fact that 24 drivers were stopped and spoken to in a relatively short period demonstrates why this work is so important. Most motorists want to do the right thing, and by providing education and advice we can help improve understanding, change behaviour and ultimately prevent serious collisions, injuries and tragic fatalities on our roads.”
