On the 28th July, the Westbury Area Family History Group welcomes Lesley Meaker from Artcare at Salisbury Hospital who will give a talk entitled, ‘Yanks at Odstock’.
On 12 December 1942, the 5th General Hospital transferred the hospital structures, together with the 361 remaining patients to a new location near Salisbury. In anticipation of D-Day landings in 1944 these soldiers created the buildings on the site of modern day Salisbury District Hospital; which to this day still specialises in Burns and Plastic Surgery.
ArtCare have photographs, stories and memorabilia that provide a fascinating insight from that pivotal time and link stories between war, medicine and the birth of NHS.
The Westbury Area Family History Group meets every 4th Thursday of the month at 7.15pm in the foyer of Westbury’s Methodist Church. The branch has regular interesting and informative talks and discussions by members and guest speakers on all aspects of family history and general history.
