A ONE-WOMAN theatre show brings a story of endurance and spirit to this year’s Westbury Festival as the event shapes up to be ‘bigger and better’ than before.
‘Oh Mary!’ is based on the incredible life story of Mary Bryant; Cornish highway woman, convict, mother and maritime adventurer and will be performed by Bec Applebee, who is well known for her work with internationally acclaimed companies Kneehigh Theatre, Golden Tree Productions, Cousin Jack’s, Dalla and the Tosta Band.
The show takes place on 2nd October, from 7.30pm to 10pm, at The Laverton, and comes highly recommended by festival secretary Brenda Pyne, who says, “It is a great show – my husband Stephen and I saw it last year at the Minack Theatre when we were staying in St. Ives.”
Bec says, “Mary Bryant’s story is one of incredible endurance and indomitable spirit. She is a young woman from Fowey who, as a convict is sent away to the other side of the world to Botany Bay, Australia. She is at the heart of one of maritime’s greatest escapes in an open cutter with her young family and a band of fellow prisoners. Hers is an epic story of personal strength, bravery and loss; of an indomitable human spirit”.
Tickets for Oh Mary! cost £8. To book go to http://TheLaverton.co.uk
Westbury Festival takes place over the fortnight of 25th September in venues across the town. It is one of the town’s biggest events, and will be one of the first post-lockdown events for the community to enjoy.
This year attractions in the pipeline include a talk by Channel 5’s ‘Yorkshire Shepherdess’, Amanda Owen; a ‘fireside chat’ giving a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of the Army Officers’ Selection Board at Leighton House; and the popular lunchtime concerts at All Saints Church which will form the backbone of the festival.
