WESTBURY and District Cricket Club travelled to play Corsham in the first game of the second stage of the West of England League Wiltshire Division 2023 season hoping to put behind them their defeat at Winsley.
Westbury made one change from their previous game with Steve Clare coming in for the unavailable Daniel Gill. Westbury won the toss and decided to field first as the forecast was for heavy rain later in the afternoon.
Corsham opened with the experienced openers of Peter Dennett and Tom Abbott and they made a bad start when with the score at 15 Westbury struck for the first time when Dennett was caught by Steve Clare off the bowling of Richard Oakley for 4.
Alfie Johnson then came to the wicket to join Abbott and they took the score to 41 when Westbury struck again with Johnson bowled by Richard Oakley for 12. Then the Corsham captain Luke Curtis joined Abbott and they gradually got on top and with some good running and sensible batting. The 100 arrived in the 20th over.
When the total reached 145 Westbury struck for the third time when Richard Mills had Abbott caught by Jino Jojo for 75 off 94 balls in 119 minutes. Luke Curtis with the rest of the lower order eventually took the Corsham total to 239 for 9 wickets in the allotted 44 overs (due to rain interruptions).
Jino Jojo (4-33 off 6 overs) had the best figures ably supported by Richard Oakley (2-39 off 10 overs) and Andy Carroll (2-45 off 9 overs). An early tea was taken and then the heavens opened with heavy rain.
Play was then called off with the agreement of the umpires Kris Boulton and Tony Weedon and the captains Luke Curtis (Corsham) and Matt Greatley (Westbury).
