Westbury versus Devizes at Westbury on Saturday 19th June
WESTBURY entertained high flying local rivals Devizes in the latest West of England Wiltshire Division match hoping to continue their unbeaten run after last week’s home win against Calne.
Westbury made 4 changes from last week’s win against Calne with Steve Clare, Luke Dilena, Marcus Telford and James Dark coming in for Richard Mills, Michael Cooper, Aidan Wicks and James Clack. Devizes won the toss and with the forecast of heavy rain asked Westbury to bat first.
Westbury opened with Chris Thompson and Matt Greatley, and they made a disastrous start and lost eight wickets for 64 with the Devizes seamers McGowan ( 3 for 15 off nine overs) and Jon Candler ( 4 for 29 off nine overs) doing the damage. Then there was a fine partnership of 36 between the Westbury captain Richard Oakley (20*) and Andy Carroll (18) who took the Westbury total to 100 when Devizes struck for the ninth time by having Carroll caught in the deep by Joe Wookey . Marcus Telford on his club Ist XI league debut then came to join his captain at the wicket and they took the total to 111 all out in the 38th over.
When Devizes batted, they opened with Dominic Shearn and Rome England and they made a fine opening stand of 36 when Westbury struck by dismissing Shearn bowled by the Westbury captain Richard Oakley for 15 and then in a couple balls later he also took the wicket of the Devizes captain Mathew Tilley for 0 with the total standing at 36.
Rome England was then joined by Joe Wookey. When the score reached 63 Westbury struck for the third time by having Rome England caught by Andy Carroll off the bowling of Jade Edmund for 29. Wookey was the joined by Tim Saye and they took the total to 110 when Joe Wookey was leg before off the bowling of the debutant Marcus Telford for 20. It was then left to Tim Saye (30*) and Tom Andrrew (4*) to take Devizes to a fine six wicket win.
Next week’s match is away against local rivals Warminster and hopefully with missing players returning Westbury should give them a change at ending their loss against Warminster.
