AFTER a challenging two years, the award-winning Hilly Helmet Challenge running event returns to the Leighton Recreation Centre in Westbury on Wednesday 10th August.
Once again, all proceeds from the event will be going to the charity Brain Tumour Support which supports anyone affected by the diagnosis of a brain tumour.
The event offers prizes to first male and female finishers, with a new prize introduced this year for first male and female aged 15-18. As usual, there is a special prize to the participant wearing the best helmet in the opinion of the judges. If you’re up for the challenge and can design some creative headgear, this is the event for you.
Entry is available online at www.entrycentral.com/ thehillyhelmetchallenge and on the day.
Organisers say, “Be warned this event sells out fast, so don’t delay, please sign up today and help us to help Brain Tumour Support once again this year.”
The scenic route heads out through a quiet lane before climbing up a bridleway to the Imber Range Path, following public rights of way offering spectacular views across Westbury and beyond towards the Avon Valley before looping back under an imposing avenue of Beech trees and dropping back down to head back to the finish at the recreation centre where a warm supporting atmosphere (and unique pottery memento) greets every finisher. There will be refreshments and a BBQ provided by Westbury Cricket Club.
The four (ish) mile event was created by Robin-Mark Schols based on his experience of having to wear a safety helmet for a year after suffering a brain infection following a brain tumour removal. It is held to raise funds for a Brain Tumour Support charity, raising over £20, 000 since it started in 2017.
During a tough couple of years for everyone, the charity looked set to miss out on the annual fund raiser in 2020 until Robin was able to convert the event so participants were offered the chance to take part virtually. The event returned to an on-the-night event last year, enjoying a good attendance, and everyone managed to comply with social distancing rules in place at the time.
Robin gains support for event expenses from local businesses, most of whom have remained loyal to the event each year it has been held, along with many of those who take part.
